What is the core of Core Hypnosis?

Core Hypnosis combines the therapeutic effectiveness of hypnotherapy and solution-focused psychotherapy. It is a deeply respectful, gentle yet powerful means of overcoming problems and limitations.

Five core principles guide the way that I work:

  1. Life is great, but sometimes hurts like hell*
Just being alive means that we are heir to all the joys and sorrows that life can bring. Life can hurt for many reasons: through recent or long ago events that still trouble us, battles with addictive substances or behaviours, fears, worries and stress, the consequences of physical problems and so on. Sometimes things resolve all by themselves. Sometimes they don’t and we seem to get stuck. When life hurts or gets stuck this is not a sign of weakness on our part, lack of effort or will power. It is, though, an opportunity to grow as a person. Core Hypnosis is a wonderful way to foster this forward movement.
    * I am indebted to Dr. Stephen Gilligan for this delightful phrase which he uses in his wonderful book The Courage to Love: Principles and Practices of Self-Relations Psychotherapy. 1997. W.W. Norton & Company.
  2. At our core we have all the resources we need to thrive
Therapy is often thought of as a process in which an ‘expert’ (the therapist) provides answers and solutions to a ‘client’ who remains essentially passive. Nothing could be further from the truth. The only expert in the therapeutic relationship is the client. A good therapist acts as a guide and catalyst, helping each person discover their own unique inner resources that they need to bring resolution to whatever is stuck in their life. But, if we all have these wonderful inner resources how come we get stuck? There is a very long answer to that question. The short answer is that the inner resources we need, or the reasons for our stucknes, are sometimes unavailable to our everyday conscious mind. The great contribution of hypnosis is that it offers a wonderfully respectful, and often swift, way to get in touch with these resources and/or reasons.
  3. We are all wholly unique
Because of this truth there is no standard technique or process of therapy, nor is there a standard time in which results occur. For some people results appear very quickly, for others it is a slower process. The important thing is not speed per se but achieving the valuable goals you seek in a way that fits with who you are.
  4. Therapy is serious, but should never be a drudge
There is no doubt that some people are still a little reluctant to seek the help of a hypnotherapist or psychotherapist because it might appear to be an arduous and painful process. I believe that therapy should be an uplifting and inspiring experience. To be sure there are times when we may need to deal with painful memories and feelings, but even in these times you will feel totally supported and respected – going only as far and as fast as is right for you. I also believe that the best work is achieved when the seriousness of the task is leavened by the spirits of good humour and deep curiosity.
  5. Core hypnosis can be of value even when life doesn’t hurt
Many people who seek help from a hypnotherapist do so because some aspect of their life isn’t working. However, Core Hypnosis can also help people further develop the skills they already have. For example, it can help people:
    • Improve sports and other performance skills
    • Enhance creativity
    • Discover what truly inspires them
    • Become more of who they can become.
